Papers and photographs, 1898-1992.

Papers and photographs relating to the two United States battleships named Wisconsin. The first Wisconsin (BB-9) was launched in 1898 and scrapped in 1922. The second Wisconsin (BB-64) was launched in 1943 and saw action in the Pacific toward the end of World War II. After a brief decommissioning, it was reactivated for service in the Korean War. It also saw action in the Persian Gulf War and is currently berthed at Norfolk, Virginia. A majority of the collection pertains to BB-64 and includes written histories, papers relating to decommissioning and recommissioning ceremonies, newspaper clippings, telephone directories, and information about the silver serving set made for the ship by the State of Wisconsin. Two oversized folders, both pertaining to BB-64, contain a poem about its decommissioning in 1991 and a poster about a museum exhibit on the ship. Papers relating to BB-9 consist of a written history, newspaper clippings, a menu, and two color postcards. Photographs include three shots of BB-9 and many shots of the interior of BB-64 from a 1987 tour. An oversized photo folder contains a large undated photograph of a decommissioning crew with BB-64 in the background.
